Three lives were saved after the family of a brain-dead patient at Government Medical College and Hospital decided to donate his organs. This milestone marks the hospital’s 19th successful organ donation.
The donor, 61-year-old Ravindra Raut, a tailor from Rajapeth, Amravati, was critically injured on November 16 in a hit-and-run accident involving an autorickshaw. Initially treated at a private hospital in Amravati, Raut was later shifted to the Trauma Care Center at Nagpur Medical College. Despite three days of treatment, he showed no signs of recovery.
Neurosurgeon Dr. Piyush declared him brain-dead, leading coordinators Bhagyashree Nighot from the MOHAN Foundation and social worker Shyam Panjala to counsel his family. After two days of discussions, Raut’s sons, Vaibhav and Shyam, made the heartfelt decision to donate his organs.
A team of doctors, including Medical Superintendent Dr. Avinash Gawande, Dr. Rohan Roy, Dr. Soma Cham, Dr. Prasenjit Dhawale, Dr. Akshay Shende, and Dr. Vrushali Mahatme, confirmed Raut’s brain-death. The surgery was conducted under the supervision of Trauma Care Center in-charge Dr. Abdul Qureshi and Dr. Pratik Debaji.
Raut’s organs were donated to critically ill patients, with two kidneys sent to Super Hospital and Wockhardt Hospital, and a liver to New Era Hospital. The process was smoothly coordinated by Dr. Sumit Chahakar under the guidance of Dr. Gawande.
Speaking about the achievement, Dean Dr. Raj Gajbhiye emphasized the importance of organ donation. “We are committed to improving organ donation rates through systematic management and public awareness efforts,” he said.
