Doctors at Max Super Specialty Hospital, Nagpur, successfully saved the life of a 38-year-old patient who had suffered a severe heart attack by performing a critical cardiac procedure. The patient, with a history of deep vein thrombosis, shortness of breath, and low oxygen levels, was rushed to the emergency department in severe respiratory distress. Immediate admission was taken care of, and the patient was immediately shifted for a CT scan and CT pulmonary angiography, which revealed massive clots in the pulmonary arteries. Further diagnostics confirmed the presence of clots in the pulmonary artery, a condition known as pulmonary embolism.
While in the emergency room, the patient suffered a cardiac arrest. Recognizing the urgency, the Emergency Team promptly initiated high-quality Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and followed Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) protocols. An Altiplase shot was administered through the vein to dissolve the clots in the pulmonary artery and prevent future blockages. The expert team of doctors, led by Dr. V. Niranjani, Head of the Emergency Room, intubated the patient and rigorously adhered to ACLS protocols. Additionally, on-call cardiologist Dr. Shoeb Nadeem provided real-time diagnosis and treatment, guiding the subsequent steps in emergency management. Dr. Niranjani, Emergency Medicine Specialist at Max Super Specialty Hospital, Nagpur, said, “The patient presented timely to the hospital and our team proactively anticipated the diagnosis and it’s complications.
The rapid activation of our resuscitation protocols was critical. Such timely ER visit and partnerships are vital to improve outcomes for patients facing life-threatening emergencies like pulmonary embolism. Each specialist’s expertise contributed to not only the successful resuscitation but also in optimizing the patient’s recovery”. Furthermore he added, “As we reflect on this success during the patient safety week, we are reminded of the critical role teamwork plays in emergency medicine for right diagnosis at right time, ultimately enhancing patient care and saving lives.”
The patient showed gradual improvement, was taken off the ventilator the next day, and was discharged on the fourth day of hospitalization. He was prescribed oral blood thinners (oral anticoagulants) to manage his condition. This case underscores the importance of strong collaboration between the emergency medicine department and other specialties and critical care teams in multidisciplinary tertiary care setups.
