The Maharashtra police have directed their personnel to take strict action against two-wheeler riders and pillion passengers not wearing helmets, citing a rise in road accident fatalities, an official stated on Wednesday.
Senior police officials, including district superintendents, have been instructed to enforce stringent penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act for violations, the official added.
Previously, there was no distinction in penalties between riders and pillion passengers without helmets. Moving forward, data on violations will be categorized separately to ensure better monitoring and enforcement, the official explained.
