One year-old baby girl was referred from one of the Western Coafields Ltd (WCL) Centres for further evaluation. The baby was found to have abdominal pain and abdominal distension for 1 month, umbilical swelling/abdominal distension. The 7 kg baby was investigated further as imaging was done at the hospital with experienced radiologists team of Dr. Amol Gawle and Dr. Mayur Mahadule who provided a clear picture to be able have a surgical plan for the neoplastic lesion of the right ovary and adjacent tissue tumor. Dr. Kushal Bhajan, a specialist in pediatrics, was available at every step and took care of the patient.
Dr. Venkatesh Rewale, consultant Oncosurgeon, immediately attended to the patient and assured the relatives of the outcome. With the help of Senior Anaesthesiologisr Dr. Neeta Deshpande, the complicated surgery was planned keeping all precautions in mind. The one year-old was operated on for a tumor mass in the abdomen. The ovarian tissue was saved. The abdomen was closed with child-friendly and cosmetic sutures.
The patient’s condition improved steadily. Shortly thereafter, oral nutrition was started and finally, on discharge, the patient’s condition was stable. Pathologist Dr. Shailendra Mundhada provided important diagnostic support as the final diagnosis turned out to be a dermoid cyst requiring no further treatment.
The child continued to be monitored regularly.
In addition to the multidisciplinary team, the baby received comprehensive care from a dedicated team post surgery in the ward lead by Dr.Tanisha Ingley and Sister Mary Chakos.
