A humble roadside ‘chaiwala’ from Ram Nagar in Nagpur is in the spotlight after receiving an invitation to attend Devendra Fadnavis’ swearing-in ceremony at Azad Maidan in Mumbai on December 5.
Gopal Bawankule, who runs a small tea stall in the Nagpur West constituency, has shared a long-standing bond with Fadnavis since 1999, when the latter first won the Assembly elections.
Fadnavis’ political journey began earlier when he became a Corporator from Ram Nagar Ward and went on to become Nagpur’s youngest Mayor in 1997. Bawankule, a loyal supporter of Fadnavis, proudly displays a photograph of the leader at his tea stall. “Fadnavis had tea at my stall about two and a half years ago,” he fondly remembers.
Even though Fadnavis was unable to visit Bawankule’s stall during the recent Assembly elections due to other commitments, Bawankule remained a firm supporter. He continued to actively campaign for Fadnavis from his stall, which lies within the leader’s new constituency.
A Memorable Invitation
Bawankule’s ordinary day of brewing tea took an unexpected turn when he received a surprise call from Fadnavis’ office, inviting him to the swearing-in ceremony. “I was overjoyed and couldn’t believe it,” he shared, adding that he is already preparing for the trip to Mumbai. The prestigious event will see the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Ministers from various states, industrialists, film stars, saints, and other notable personalities.
Free Tea for All
In celebration of Fadnavis’ return as Chief Minister, Bawankule has decided to treat his customers to free tea on December 5. “My friends and associates will take charge of the stall and ensure that everyone who visits gets free tea,” he said with pride.
The invitation serves as a reminder of the personal connection Fadnavis has with his constituents, regardless of their background. For Bawankule, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and a source of immense pride for the humble tea seller, who views Fadnavis not just as a leader but as a personal hero.
