Spas, traditionally associated with wellness and relaxation, are increasingly becoming fronts for illegal activities, including sex rackets, raising concerns across the nation. In Nagpur, this disturbing trend has cast a shadow on the city’s legitimate spa industry.
Data from the Social Security Branch (SSB) of the Crime Branch reveals that out of 23 sex rackets busted in Nagpur during the first 11 months of 2024, 13 were being operated under the pretense of spa services. This alarming statistic underscores the urgent need for stricter regulation and monitoring of spa establishments.
SSB Police Inspector Kavita Isarkar highlighted the growing exploitation within the industry. “The accused often lure women from modest backgrounds into illicit activities, which are prohibited under the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act. Many of these so-called spas operate without the necessary approvals for therapies, functioning instead under shop and establishment licenses. It’s imperative to enforce stricter licensing norms and ensure that spas meet specific operational standards,” Isarkar explained.
The negative publicity surrounding spas has also impacted fitness enthusiasts. Kapil Zanzad, owner of The Kapil Gym, noted how the stigma has deterred many male clients from visiting spas. “Massages are essential for muscle recovery after intense workouts, but the association of spas with illegal activities has led many to avoid them altogether. Instead, they prefer male masseuses or in-house massage sessions at gyms to steer clear of controversy,” Zanzad said.
Dedicated Efforts by SSB:
The SSB team, led by PI Kavita Isarkar and supported by WHC Aarti Chawhan, NPC Sheshrao Raut, and PCs Ashwin Mange, Sameer Sheikh, Kunal Masram, and Nitik Wasnik, has been instrumental in cracking down on such rackets. Their efforts have not only resulted in busting 23 rackets but also in rescuing several women from exploitation as of November 2024.
