Passengers at Nagpur Railway Station are bracing for more challenges as the station undergoes phased redevelopment. The Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) plans to begin work on platforms 6 and 7, which will remain closed for 70 days once the project starts. This closure is expected to increase the strain on other platforms and facilities.
One such issue is the overcrowded foot overbridge on platform 8, which lacks a ramp on the east side. This poses difficulties for passengers, especially those with heavy luggage, children, or elderly family members, as they struggle to navigate the congested steps.
According to media report, a recent incident highlighted these challenges. Sneha Verma, a passenger who returned from Jaipur with her six-year-old son, shared her frustration with railway staff and RPF officers. She explained that the overbridge on platform 8 was so crowded she had to wait at the side to avoid the rush. However, RPF officers reportedly forced her and others to move into the crushing crowd, further aggravating the situation.
With platforms 6 and 7 set to close, passengers fear that such issues will worsen, making travel even more challenging at the station.
Passengers at Nagpur Railway Station are set to face greater challenges as platforms 6 and 7 will soon close for redevelopment. The Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) plans to take over these platforms for 70 days, with preparations already underway. “The modalities are being finalized, and the work is expected to begin by mid-December,” said Aman Mittal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (SrDCM) of Central Railway Nagpur.
Sources revealed that redevelopment will begin with foundation work on platforms 6 and 7, following similar work at Ajni Railway Station. “The station’s age has uncovered hidden underground elements like pipelines and wires, complicating the process,” a source said.
After platforms 6 and 7, work will move to platforms 4 and 5, and then platforms 2 and 3, each for 70 days. Platforms 2 and 3, being busier, are scheduled last to minimize disruptions. “Platforms 6 and 7 were prioritized to address hidden complexities, easing work on busier platforms. During this time, only goods trains will use these platforms,” the source added.
The phased closure is expected to add to passenger challenges, requiring effective management throughout the redevelopment.
