Nagpur: A recent survey has shed light on growing passenger dissatisfaction regarding exorbitant food prices at Indian airports. The findings reveal that travelers frequently feel overcharged for basic food items, sparking calls for regulatory intervention to address this issue.
Conducted across major airports, the survey highlighted that over 60% of respondents believe food prices at airports are “unreasonably high” compared to regular market rates. Many passengers reported paying up to double or triple the standard prices for basic items like bottled water, snacks, and meals.
“Passengers are left with no choice but to pay inflated rates due to restricted access to alternatives inside airport premises,” one respondent noted.
Authorities Take Note
Acknowledging the growing discontent, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has promised to review pricing practices and ensure vendors adhere to fair pricing standards. Airport officials emphasized the need to strike a balance between providing quality services and ensuring affordability.
Comparative Pricing Under Scrutiny
The survey also pointed out discrepancies in pricing across different airports, with private airports reportedly charging more than government-run facilities.
Future Actions
Advocates are calling for more transparency in pricing and the inclusion of affordable options in airport food courts. Some passengers have even urged authorities to allow external food items or establish more budget-friendly kiosks.
This growing concern reflects the need for better regulation to enhance the travel experience and ensure affordability for passengers navigating India’s expanding aviation sector.
