Stroke Care Redefined
In a groundbreaking medical achievement, the Neurology team at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Superspeciality Institute (DBASI), the superspecialty wing of the 1020-bedded Shalinitai Meghe Hospital and Research Centre (SMHRC), Wanadongri, Nagpur, successfully treated a challenging case of recurrent posterior circulation stroke caused by bilateral vertebral artery stenosis through advanced endovascular intervention.
A 61-year-old woman from Wadgaon, Buldana, presented to SMHRC with debilitating symptoms, including vertigo, vomiting, imbalance while walking, and speech difficulties. Under the care of Dr. Mandar Waghralkar, Interventional Neurologist, and Dr. Jiwan Kinkar, Neurologist, a detailed evaluation and angiographic imaging revealed severe bilateral vertebral artery stenosis, which had led to recurrent strokes. Despite receiving optimal blood thinner therapy, her symptoms persisted, putting her at high risk for future strokes.
Given the severity of her condition, the Neurology team opted for a neuro-interventional approach. The patient underwent vertebral artery angioplasty and stenting, a minimally invasive procedure to restore proper blood flow to the brain. The procedure, skillfully performed by Dr. Mandar Waghralkar, with anesthesia support from Dr. Kiran Vyawahare and assistance from technicians Sr. Sharda, Mr. Prathamesh, and Mr. Chinmay, involved accessing the narrowed artery through a tiny needle puncture in the groin, akin to heart angioplasty. The narrowed artery was widened, and a stent was placed to ensure continuous blood flow to the brain.
Dr. Vasant Gawande, Chief Medical Superintendent of SMHRC, reported that the patient’s post-operative recovery was smooth and uneventful. Significant improvements were observed in her symptoms, including restored balance and speech. She was discharged in a stable condition with an excellent prognosis. Dr. Shubham Duggad, IR Fellow, along with Dr. Nilkanth, Dr. Kumkum, and nursing staff Sr. Ragini, Sr. Devashree, Sr. Mukta, Sr. Nandini, and Sr. Ashna, provided comprehensive pre- and post-procedure care under the supervision of Sr. Geeta Kubde, ANS. Administrative support was coordinated by Dr. Noorul Ameen, Administrator-DBASI, Mr. Praful Dhabekar, Manager Radiology, and Ms. Pranali Pokle, Floor Manager.
Dr. Mandar Waghralkar emphasized that Interventional Neurology represents a cutting-edge advancement in treating brain-related vascular disorders. Minimally invasive procedures such as clot removal for acute stroke, aneurysm coiling, and angioplasty with stenting significantly reduce risks, complications, and recovery times compared to traditional brain surgeries.
Dr. Anup Marar, SMHRC Director, lauded the Neurology team’s expertise and their commitment to adopting advanced techniques for neurological care. He reaffirmed SMHRC’s dedication to providing state-of-the-art neurological care in minimalistic costs to the community.
Equipped with an advanced Cath Lab, SMHRC continues to strengthen its position as a leading center for advanced neurological and stroke care in Central India, offering a broad range of interventional procedures to address complex conditions.
