CM announces Rs 5 lakh compensation
The death toll in the Mumbai boat accident has gone up to 13. The casualties include ten civilians and three Navy personnel. The accident occurred at 3.55 pm on Wednesday when a Navy speed boat collided with a passenger boat Neelkamal. The passenger boat was going from Gateway of India to Elephanta Island, a popular tourist place. Two critically injured individuals are being treated at the Navy hospital. 101 people were rescued.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased. The Navy will conduct a thorough investigation into the accident.
Search and rescue operations were immediately launched by the Navy in coordination with the Coast Guard and Marine Police. Four naval helicopters, 11 naval craft, one Coast Guard boat and three Marine Police boats were involved in the rescue operations, Navy authorities said.
The accident occurred when the ill-fated Navy speed boat was testing the new engine installed on it.
