Vidarbha, including Nagpur, woke up to cloudy skies and light fog on Monday, with temperatures witnessing a sharp rise. Nagpur’s minimum temperature jumped from 11°C on Sunday to 14.6°C within 24 hours.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts moderate cold conditions for the region over the next two days, followed by rain, hail, and fluctuating weather patterns. Gusty winds are also expected to accompany the moderate cold in Maharashtra, including Nagpur.
From December 25 to 26, temperatures are forecasted to rise slightly, bringing brief warmth. However, cloudy skies and isolated rain will return between December 26 and 28, impacting districts such as Nagpur, Akola, Amravati, Gondia, Chandrapur, and Washim.
On December 27, light hailstorms are likely in 25 districts across Vidarbha, including Akola, Amravati, Nagpur, Gondia, Wardha, Washim, and parts of Central Maharashtra and Marathwada. As the year ends, colder weather is expected to make a comeback.
The IMD attributes these weather fluctuations to an intense western disturbance entering the country around December 26. Additionally, cold, dry winds from southeast Rajasthan and moist winds from the Gulf of Oman are forecasted to converge at an altitude of 1.5 to 2 km. This atmospheric collision may lead to hail formation due to rapid condensation during the liquefaction stage, explained meteorologist Manikrao Khule.
