Former Prime Minister and veteran Congress leader Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. Singh had been admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi earlier this week after his health deteriorated.
Dr. Singh was brought to the hospital’s emergency department around 8 pm on Monday. Despite efforts by medical professionals, he passed away on Thursday.
Known as the architect of India’s economic reforms, Singh rose to prominence as the Finance Minister in Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao’s government from 1991 to 1996. His policies transformed the Indian economy, steering the country toward liberalization.
He served as India’s Prime Minister for two consecutive terms from 2004 to 2014 during the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) rule and remained a member of the Rajya Sabha until his retirement in April this year.
Dr. Singh’s family and senior Congress leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, had been by his side during his final moments. Tributes have poured in from across the nation, with leaders and citizens mourning the loss of a statesman whose contributions to India’s progress will be remembered for generations.
Further details regarding funeral arrangements are awaited.
