A woman was injured by nylon manja near Omkar Nagar Square on Ring Road on Friday evening. The incident took place around 5 p.m. when Neha Sharma, an ayurvedic practitioner from Pratap Nagar, was heading home. As she turned at the square, a nylon kite string caught her. Fortunately, her helmet and scarf protected her neck from serious injury. She managed to stop her vehicle safely, avoiding a fall. However, the string left her with injuries near her nose and eyes.
While trying to free herself, Neha Sharma sustained a deep cut on her right thumb, resulting in heavy bleeding. Bystanders quickly applied turmeric to her wound, and she was taken to a hospital where stitches were administered. Her condition is now stable.
The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court has taken suo moto cognizance of the hazards of nylon kite strings, filing a PIL to address the issue. Police records indicate 84 cases related to nylon manja were registered in Nagpur from January to November 2024, with an additional 47 cases in December.
Cyber police are closely monitoring online platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, IndiaMART, Justdial, JioMart, and Facebook Marketplace to curb the sale of banned nylon kite strings. As per the media report, authorities have arrested 183 individuals for storing and selling the prohibited material.
