Nagpur residents are increasingly worried about the rising number of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases in Pune, with four patients receiving treatment at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in the past two months.
Out of the four cases, two patients have been discharged, while two remain under medical care. An 8-year-old boy has been on a ventilator since December 16, while a 14-year-old girl is reported to be stable.
GMCH Superintendent Dr. Avinash Gawande clarified that GBS is caused when antibodies, which typically fight infections, mistakenly attack the nervous system. “Half of the patients recover within one to two months, and 70 percent recover within six months. However, some cases may take up to a year,” he stated.
He urged the public not to panic, emphasizing that timely and proper treatment is critical for recovery.
