Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co Ltd (MahaVitaran) has mandated the recovery of unpaid electricity bills from new homeowners, even if the dues belong to previous owners. This follows a Supreme Court ruling allowing electricity companies to collect outstanding bills from property owners, irrespective of ownership changes.
New homeowners must apply for an electricity meter with the electricity board after purchasing a property. The board has the right to deny a connection if there are pending electricity bills from the previous owner. This combined decision was issued in 19 cases of connection denial across various states, including Maharashtra.
A total of Rs 147.02 crore is pending from 1,82,497 customers whose connections have been disconnected. MahaVitaran has urged all customers to verify electricity bills before purchasing a new house.
