Buldhana, Maharashtra: In an extraordinary medical case, a 32-year-old pregnant woman from Maharashtra’s Buldhana district has been diagnosed with ‘fetus in fetu’, an extremely rare congenital anomaly where a malformed fetus develops inside another fetus. The condition, reported in only one in five lakh pregnancies, was detected during a routine sonography at Buldhana District Women’s Hospital, officials confirmed.
Dr. Prasad Agarwal, an obstetrician and gynecologist at the hospital, identified the anomaly in the 35-week pregnancy, making it one of the rarest prenatal detections of its kind. “This condition is so rare that only about 200 cases have been recorded globally, and most of them were diagnosed post-delivery,” Dr. Agarwal stated. In India, there have been only 10-15 such reported cases.
Given the complexity of the case, the woman has been referred to a specialized medical facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar for a safe delivery and further medical intervention, authorities said.
This rare discovery has not only baffled medical experts but also highlighted the importance of advanced prenatal diagnostics in detecting unusual fetal conditions.
