Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is set to temporarily shut down Terminal 1 this year for renovations. According to reports, the terminal will undergo redevelopment to enhance passenger capacity. To manage operations during the closure, flights will be redirected to CSMIA’s Terminal 2 and the newly built Navi Mumbai International Airport.
In 2023, Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is set to close Terminal 1 for major renovations. The redevelopment plans, initiated by Mumbai International Airport, will begin this year, involving the demolition of the existing structure.
The impact on daily operations is expected to be minimal, as the newly built Navi Mumbai International Airport and Mumbai’s Terminal 2 will handle the passenger load during the demolition of Terminal 1.
After redevelopment, the airport is expected to handle 20 million passengers annually, marking a 42% increase in capacity. Authorities anticipate reaching this target by 2029. Phase II of the project includes constructing a new terminal alongside the modernization of the existing one, with all changes set for completion within three years.
According to a media report, a press statement confirmed that the redevelopment of Terminal 1 will coincide with the expansion of the current Passenger Terminal Building to cater to the increasing number of domestic passengers. Additionally, there is a possibility of merging domestic and international operations in the future. The upgrade phase is set to bring significant improvements, including enhanced cooling through landscaping, multipurpose substations, and a modernized baggage handling system.
