Teen’s Tragic Suicide Highlights Digital Dangers, Nagpur Police Issue Advisory
With minors increasingly becoming targets of cybercrime, Nagpur Police have urged parents to monitor their children’s online interactions and browsing history. The advisory comes in the wake of the tragic suicide of 17-year-old Prajakta Shende, which has exposed the growing risks associated with social media and internet usage.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Cyber and Zone 1, Lohit Matani, emphasized the shift in how children socialize in the digital era. “Earlier, children would play outdoors, and parents could easily know their friends. Now, with social media, friendships have gone virtual, making it difficult for parents to track their child’s interactions,” he said.
DCP Matani advised parents to regularly check their children’s browsing history, chats, and social media usage. “Children often seek solace on online platforms. By tracking their online activities, parents can detect early warning signs and prevent untoward incidents,” he explained.
However, police personnel acknowledged the challenge of children using incognito modes and VPNs to hide their internet activities. “Parents need to have open conversations and clearly explain why monitoring online behavior is essential for their safety,” a police officer suggested.
DCP Matani highlighted a worrying trend of minors becoming victims of cyber fraud, online blackmail, and other digital crimes. “Teenagers need to navigate social media responsibly. Unfortunately, most cybercrime victims are minors,” he noted.
