The Union Budget 2025-26, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, has allocated ₹295.64 crore for the Nag River Pollution Abatement Project in Nagpur. This funding is expected to accelerate efforts to restore the historically and culturally significant Nag River.
The ₹1,927 crore project will be executed in five phases and aims to curb pollution by preventing untreated sewage from entering the river. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), the project’s nodal agency, has appointed Tata Consulting Engineers Limited (TCE) as the consultant. Ground surveys are currently underway, and construction will begin once they are completed.
The project focuses on developing a proper sewerage system by laying pipelines along the riverbanks and setting up sewage treatment plants (STPs). These measures will prevent the direct flow of domestic and industrial waste from Central and North Nagpur into the Nag and Pili Rivers, thereby improving the city’s sanitation and restoring the river’s ecosystem.
While the expected completion timeline is eight years, NMC aims to finish the project within five. The funding structure includes a 60% contribution from the central government, 25% from the state government, and 15% from NMC. A major portion of the project cost will be financed through a Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) loan.
Additionally, the project will also cover the Pohra and Pili Rivers, further enhancing Nagpur’s water infrastructure. Officials believe the initiative will significantly improve environmental conditions while preserving the river’s ecological and historical value.
