India’s fast-growing economy will have a major expansion in smaller airports and the development of airports in hilly regions, giving the aviation sector a significant boost for greater heights.
The Indian skies will witness increased connectivity with 120 smaller airports over the next 10 years, as announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman while presenting the Modi Regime 3 budget for 2025-26 in the Lok Sabha.
Aviation remains India’s fastest-growing sector, with air passenger numbers reaching record highs in 2024.
The development of international airports like Jewar and Navi Mumbai—built to world-class standards with state-of-the-art facilities—will soon be open to the public. Additionally, the expansion of smaller airports and the strengthening of airport infrastructure in hilly regions will enhance air connectivity between smaller cities.
With the Modi government’s vision for aviation, the demand for smaller aircraft is expected to rise significantly, catering to passengers from remote and smaller regions. The UDAN scheme has been a major success in this regard.
IndiGo, India’s largest airline with a 64% market share, has already placed an order for over 450 aircraft of various types. Meanwhile, Air India is also expanding its fleet, adding wings to India’s aviation growth.
While announcing developments in the aviation sector, the Finance Minister strategically prioritized the upcoming Bihar assembly elections by declaring Patna a greenfield airport and placing the rest of Bihar on the aviation development map.
This budget has been widely welcomed, with a strong focus on agriculture, MSMEs, investments, and exports. It is aligned with the vision of Viksit Bharat and is expected to boost GDP growth.
One of the biggest announcements came at the end—individuals earning ₹12 lakh annually under the New Tax Regime will not have to pay any income tax. The country is cheering this move.
