The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has launched a significant infrastructure project to mitigate flooding and improve the city’s drainage system. The NMC is constructing a reinforced concrete retaining wall along the Narsala-Hudkeshwar Nullah, a key tributary of the Nag River. This project follows the devastating floods of September 2023, which caused severe waterlogging in low-lying areas of the city. Funded by the District Planning and Development Committee (DPDC), the retaining wall aims to prevent soil erosion, enhance water flow, and protect nearby residential areas.
The project will be executed in two phases: pre-tender activities such as survey and design, and post-tender construction. NMC has invited expressions of interest (EOI) for consultancy, with work expected to begin in 2025 and complete within 18 months.

In addition to the Narsala-Hudkeshwar retaining wall, NMC is implementing various flood control measures across the city. These include removing encroachments along major nullahs, expanding stormwater drains, and replacing obstructive bridges over the Nag, Pili, and Pora rivers. The Narsala-Hudkeshwar project is part of a larger ₹60-crore initiative to build 21.5 kilometers of retaining walls. Additionally, NMC has proposed an ₹800-crore plan to replace 35 flood-prone bridges.
The NMC is also advancing the Nag River Rejuvenation Project, aimed at improving sewage management, reducing pollution, and enhancing the riverfront for tourism. Despite financial constraints, with a 10% reduction in its development budget, the Maharashtra government has allocated ₹684 crore for Nagpur’s development, including funds for flood relief.
