The fate of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) elections remains uncertain, with the Supreme Court scheduled to hear the case on local body polls on February 25. The decision on whether the elections will proceed or be postponed depends on the outcome of this hearing.
Municipal Budget to be Implemented Amid Uncertainty
Meanwhile, the municipal budget for 2025-26, presented by Municipal Commissioner Dr. Abhijit Chaudhary, will have to be implemented once again this year. The budget will largely depend on state government allocations, with no plans to increase property tax or water tax. The commissioner has indicated that the budget will be presented in the first week of March.
Since March 5, 2022, NMC has been under an administrator’s rule, and there is a strong likelihood that the administrator’s budget will be implemented once again if elections are delayed.
Election Preparations Yet to Begin
The Class 10 and 12 board exams are scheduled for February and March, making an April or May election challenging. Key pre-election processes such as reservation, prabhag composition, and voter list updates typically require at least three months, yet no visible preparations have been made so far.
Despite the uncertainty, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and senior BJP leaders have advised party workers to remain prepared for elections whenever they are announced.
Municipal Departments Begin Budget Preparations
According to municipal sources, various departments have already started compiling budget proposals, listing their revenue estimates and planned projects. These will be included in the final budget, which remains to be approved either by an administrator or a newly elected body, depending on the Supreme Court’s verdict.
