A software professional, reportedly employed with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), has been accused of defrauding a Lakadganj-based businessman of Rs 15 lakh by luring him into a fake high-return investment scheme. The case took a bizarre turn when the accused attempted to return a portion of the money, leading to the freezing of the complainant’s wife’s bank account due to a cyber fraud investigation.
The victim, Jogendra Singh Rathod (45), a resident of Azad Nagar and owner of an auto parts trading shop in Adam Shah Chowk, met the accused, Neeraj Kumar Shah, a Ganeshpeth resident, approximately five years ago. Shah, who claimed to be a TCS employee, persuaded Rathod to invest in a lucrative scheme between March 1, 2023, and January 23, 2025, assuring substantial returns.
Trusting Shah’s assurances, Rathod handed over Rs 15 lakh through cash and bank transactions. In return, Shah provided Rathod with two security cheques. However, when Rathod later sought his returns, Shah allegedly transferred Rs 1 lakh to Rathod’s wife’s account using an unidentified person’s bank details. This transaction triggered a cyber fraud investigation, resulting in the freezing of her account.
Realizing he had been swindled, Rathod filed a complaint with the police. Based on his statement, the Lakadganj police have registered a case against Shah under Sections 316(2) and 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Investigations are ongoing.
