The Crime Branch Unit 3 apprehended a man with a consignment of betel nuts worth ₹1.90 lakh in the Lakadganj police station area here, on Tuesday, February 25. The action was taken following a tip-off received by the authorities.
During routine patrolling around 12:00 noon on Tuesday, officers intercepted a suspicious Shri Wheeler vehicle near Telephone Exchange Square. Upon questioning, the driver identified himself as Satish Bharat Pal (30), a resident of Gareeb Nawaz Nagar, Yashodharanagar, Nagpur.
A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 25 gunny bags of betel nuts, each weighing 50 kg, totaling 1,900 kg. During interrogation, Pal claimed that the consignment belonged to Kamal Dingra of Netaji Nagar, Yashodharanagar, Nagpur.
As betel nuts are sometimes treated with harmful substances, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been consulted for further analysis. Authorities will determine the next course of action based on their findings.
In addition to the seized betel nuts, the vehicle used for transportation was also confiscated, bringing the total value of the seized goods to ₹3.40 lakh. The accused and the confiscated items were handed over to Lakadganj Police for further investigation.
