Around 120 students from Government Boys Hostel Unit No.2 and Unit No.4 in New Khapri staged a protest on Tuesday at the social welfare office, raising concerns over poor living conditions and mismanagement. The students expressed frustration over unhygienic surroundings, substandard food, and the administration’s failure to address their repeated complaints.
Reports from a local daily highlighted the students’ grievances, particularly about the hostel mess, which allegedly operates in a parking area under unsanitary conditions. They also claimed that the food quality is poor, with the same cooking oil being used for months, further compromising hygiene and health standards.
Students have reported multiple instances of insects, cockroaches, and worms being found in their food, including inside oranges. They also alleged that the mess serves low-quality and uncertified food, which lacks Agmark certification, raising serious concerns about its safety and suitability for consumption.
Students claimed that many of them have experienced stomach pain and food poisoning due to the poor quality of meals served at the hostel. They also alleged that essential food items like milk and ghee have not been provided for months, affecting their nutrition and well-being. Additionally, graduate students residing in the hostel complained that rooms remain uncleaned for four to five days at a time, worsening their living conditions. The protesters stressed that this is not the first time they have voiced concerns about the hostel’s mismanagement.
Despite several complaints over the past months, students say no major improvements have been made. Hostel warden Rajni Vaidya claimed she had already informed higher authorities about the issues.
Assistant Commissioner Sukeshini Telgote assured that a new government-appointed cook would be hired within two days and all concerns would be addressed. However, students remain doubtful due to past inaction.
Despite repeated complaints, students claim that hostel warden Rajni Vaidya remains indifferent and often uses harsh words and threats instead of addressing their issues. They allege that her behavior creates an atmosphere of fear and helplessness in the hostel.
