A 26-year-old woman was allegedly raped inside a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus at the Pune bus stand in the early hours of Tuesday. The accused, identified as a history-sheeter, is currently on the run, and police have launched an extensive search to nab him.
According to officials, the incident took place around 5:30 AM when the woman arrived at the bus stand to board a bus to her hometown in Satara district. The accused, who was loitering on the premises, allegedly approached her under the pretense of guiding her to the correct bus. Misled by his directions, the woman boarded the bus, following which the accused also entered and assaulted her before fleeing the scene.
Following the incident, the victim boarded another bus to her hometown, where she contacted a friend and narrated the ordeal. On her friend’s insistence, she later filed a police complaint.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Smartana Patil confirmed that CCTV footage analysis helped identify the suspect, who has a criminal history with Pune rural police. “An extensive search is underway, and eight teams have been deployed for the probe,” Patil added.
