A 41-year-old painter allegedly ended his life by drowning in a water drum at his friend’s house in Samta Nagar, Jaripatka, on Wednesday night. Police confirmed the incident on Thursday, February 27.
The deceased, identified as Ritesh Ramteke (41), was a resident of Kaushalya Nagar, Ajni. He was unmarried and lived with his mother while working as a painter.
According to Jaripatka Police Inspector Arun Kshirsagar, Ritesh had been struggling with depression for some time. He had confided in his friend, Gopal Besarkar, a resident of Samta Nagar, about his mental health issues.
“On Wednesday, February 26, Ritesh visited Gopal’s house. Gopal took him to the regional mental hospital for treatment, but it was closed due to Mahashivratri. Ritesh then decided to stay over at Gopal’s place for the night,” said PI Kshirsagar.
Later that night, around 10:30 PM, CCTV footage showed Ritesh stepping out of the house. He is suspected to have drowned himself in a water drum. The incident came to light on Thursday morning when the Besarkar family woke up and found him unconscious in the drum.
Initially, there were speculations of foul play, but police ruled out any suspicion of murder. The body has been sent to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for autopsy. Further investigations are underway.
