A 17-year-old girl, rescued from a flesh trade den in Nagpur last year, was escorted by police to her examination center in Umred, 50 km from the city, on Thursday. Women police officers accompanied her, standing guard outside the venue for three hours as she wrote her first-year BA exam. After the exam, she was safely taken back to the shelter home in the same police vehicle.
The minor, who was rescued from a brothel a year ago, had cleared her Class 12 board exams within weeks while staying at the shelter home. Even then, she sought police protection due to ongoing legal and security concerns. Forced into prostitution by extreme poverty, she held onto her dream of becoming a social worker and rebuilding her life. Her parents, both daily wage laborers, struggled to make ends meet, and she was the eldest of two siblings.
The girl left home after a dispute with her family over a social media friend. She stayed with an acquaintance and took up catering and event jobs to survive. A friend later lured her into the flesh trade, promising easy money, trapping her in a vicious cycle. A police raid at a hidden brothel in Manish Nagar rescued her, and she found new hope at the government shelter home. She quickly resumed her studies, cleared her Class 12 boards, and is now focused on graduation.
A shelter home official said she is determined to complete her education and dreams of working there in the future. Four other inmates are also appearing for Class 10 and 12 board exams. The Beltarodi police swiftly approved a request to escort her to the first-year BA exams. Senior inspector Mukund Kawade emphasized the importance of her career and rehabilitation, ensuring police protection as her case is still in court.
