The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is implementing a project to install public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the city to support the growing number of EV users. The charging stations will be developed under the Design, Build, Finance, Operate & Maintain (DBFOM) model and will be located at 11 key locations, including Jaitala Bazar Square, Rahate Colony Square, Dayanand Park, Katol Road, Yashwant Stadium, Amravati Road, Futala Lake, Sakkardara, Shantinagar, Mangalwari Complex, and Central Bazar Road.
As of March 2023, Nagpur had approximately 21,732 registered EVs, making up about 1.09% of the city’s total vehicle population. EV adoption is rising, with a 282% increase in sales during 2022-23. In 2024, EVs accounted for 22% of new vehicle registrations. To accommodate this growth, NMC plans to expand charging points from 83 to 150 by 2027.
Charging services will be paid based on electricity consumption, with pricing per kWh as per Maharashtra Tariff Regulations, along with additional service charges and GST. Payments can be made via UPI, credit/debit cards, mobile wallets, and RFID authentication. Stations will primarily operate via an automated system, with some locations offering staff assistance during peak hours. CCTV surveillance will be in place for security.
The project emphasizes reliability, requiring stations to maintain uptime with penalties for disruptions. Compliance with Central Electricity Authority (CEA) safety regulations and real-time updates on station availability will help users plan their charging needs efficiently.
