More than two months after the collapse of the Butibori flyover, authorities have finally decided on the methodology for its repair. On Tuesday, officials confirmed that the bridge’s weight-bearing capacity would be enhanced by applying a new, reinforced layer.
Last week, the damaged cantilever was repaired, and studs were reinforced. However, efforts to obtain details on the flyover’s load-bearing capacity post-repair from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) remained unsuccessful. Sources suggest that NHAI officials are under significant pressure regarding the project.
The repair plan was finalized during a meeting at Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), where officials also decided on the materials to be used to strengthen the structure. Initial estimates suggested the repair work would take 45 days, but uncertainty remains over the official start date, as NHAI has yet to confirm when the work will begin.
Specialist Agency to Be Appointed
The flyover, which has shown structural weaknesses just 3.5 years after construction, will now be repaired by a specialist agency. Sources indicate that three agencies are under consideration, with one expected to be selected within the next three days. The chosen agency is likely to complete the repairs by the end of April.
Meanwhile, the delayed decision-making has caused significant traffic congestion beneath the flyover, leading to wasted time and fuel for commuters. The prolonged investigation and repair planning by NHAI officials have added to the frustration of daily travelers.
Once the NHAI confirms the official start date, a repair countdown—similar to runway recarpeting schedules—will be initiated.
