Maharashtra Minister Nitish Rane on Monday launched a new initiative, “Malhar Certification,” aimed at registering all jhatka mutton shops across the state. Under this initiative, only Hindu-owned establishments will receive certification.
Rane also announced the launch of a dedicated platform, MalharCertification.com, which will exclusively feature Hindu-run jhatka meat suppliers. He emphasized that the certification ensures unadulterated mutton, aligning with Hindu traditions.
“Today, we have taken an important step for the Hindu community in Maharashtra. MalharCertification.com has been launched to help people identify the right mutton shops. These shops will be 100% Hindu-owned, and the person selling the meat will also belong to the Hindu community. There will be no adulteration in the mutton,” Rane stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
The minister further urged Hindus to purchase mutton only from Malhar-certified shops, distinguishing it from establishments without the certification.
Jhatka vs. Halal Meat
The Malhar certification is positioned as an alternative to halal certification, which follows Islamic dietary laws. Halal meat requires the animal to be slaughtered through a slow bleeding process as per Sharia law, whereas jhatka meatinvolves a single swift blow, which is believed to be more humane.
According to the MalharCertification.com website, the platform certifies jhatka mutton and chicken vendors who adhere to Hindu traditional practices. It further specifies that the meat is sold exclusively by members of the Hindu Khatik community.
“We encourage everyone to buy mutton only from vendors certified by Malhar,” the website states.
