The National Medical Commission (NMC) has directed DY Patil Medical College, Pune, to investigate multiple allegations concerning medical students, training quality, and overall functioning. The college has been asked to submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) within seven days.
This directive follows a complaint received by NMC citing infrastructure deficiencies, financial irregularities, stipend deductions, issues with the District Residency Programme, shortcomings in medical training, and concerns regarding surgical education.
Serious Allegations Against the College
A complaint submitted to NMC highlighted multiple grievances, including:
- Infrastructure & Space Constraints: Lack of designated parking, playgrounds, and open spaces. The campus also accommodates multiple institutes, leading to congestion and resource limitations.
- Financial Irregularities: Allegations of fake documentation, extra fees for faculty and resident publications, and unauthorized stipend deductions.
- District Residency Programme Issues: Residents reportedly bear unnecessary travel and financial burdens, affecting their education.
- Medical Training Deficiencies: Claims that senior consultants prioritize private OPD practice over engaging with students, limiting learning opportunities.
- Compromised Surgical Training: Concerns that the current OT capacity cannot accommodate the growing number of surgery students, affecting hands-on training.
NMC had previously directed the college in January 2025 to respond to allegations of stipend non-payment and harassment. While the college denied the claims in February, it failed to provide documentary proof regarding stipend payments.
UDF President Demands Strict Action
Reacting to the issue, Dr. Lakshya Mittal, National President of the United Doctors’ Front (UDF), criticized the situation, stating that the allegations reflect the grim reality of medical education in India.
“Non-payment of stipends, fake documentation, financial exploitation, and faculty shortages are an assault on the dignity of medical students. Will NMC take strict action or turn a blind eye?” he questioned.
NMC has now demanded a detailed response from the college and supporting documentary evidence. The outcome of this investigation will determine whether further regulatory action will be taken against the institution.
