The Maharashtra government has decided to form a committee to assess whether the Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) should be dissolved or merged with the Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA). The announcement was made by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, raising concerns about NIT’s future role in urban development.
Concerns Over Land Regularization
A major issue raised was the delay in land regularization under the Gunthewari Act. Around 1.5 lakh plot holders in Nagpur are awaiting release letters, which NIT has failed to issue even after two years. MLA Praveen Datke criticized the 10% land reservation clause, urging its removal and a faster regularization process. He also pointed out excessive advance fees and development charges imposed by NIT, despite municipal regularization in areas like Hudkeshwar.
Opposition Demands Investigation
Former minister Nitin Raut questioned the state government’s inconsistency in handling NIT, reminding the assembly that the previous administration dissolved it, only for it to be revived again. He also demanded an inquiry into the allocation of Release Letters (RL) for plots above 40,000 sq. ft.
Government’s Response
In response, Deputy CM Shinde assured that a committee will be formed to decide whether NIT should continue, be dissolved, or be merged with NMRDA. The final decision will be based on recommendations from Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. With growing opposition pressure, NIT’s fate remains uncertain, and the committee’s findings will determine its future.
