Extended Weekend for Traders
The Indian stock market will be closed on Monday, March 31, for Eid-ul-Fitr (Ramzan Eid), an important Islamic festival. Both the NSE and BSE will halt trading and settlement in equities, derivatives, and the securities lending and borrowing (SLB) segments. Since the market is also closed on Saturday (March 29) and Sunday (March 30), traders will have an extended weekend. Trading will resume on Tuesday, April 1, 2025.
Market holidays in April 2025
In addition to weekend closures, there are three more stock market holidays in April:
- April 10 – Mahavir Jayanti
- April 14 – Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti
- April 18 – Good Friday
- May 1 – Maharashtra Day
- August 15 – Independence Day
- August 27 – Ganesh Chaturthi
- October 2 – Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti
- October 21 – Diwali & Laxmi Pujan
- October 22 – Diwali Balipratipada
- November 5 – Prakash Gurpurb
- December 25 – Christmas
In total, the Indian stock market will observe 12 holidays in 2025, excluding weekend closures. Trading and settlement in equities, derivatives, and SLB segments will be impacted on these dates.
The Indian stock market operates from Monday to Friday, with trading hours from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM. A pre-opening session runs from 9:00 AM to 9:15 AM to facilitate a smooth market opening. The market remains closed on weekends.
Market update
On Friday, the Indian stock market opened on a flat note, in contrast to global peers, which struggled amid geopolitical uncertainties surrounding Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs.
The Nifty 50 held onto its previous session’s gains, opening higher at 23,600 points, while the BSE Sensex edged up 0.11% to open at 77,690 points.
However, auto and IT stocks such as Hero MotoCorp, Ashok Leyland, TVS Motor, M&M, LTI Mindtree, Wipro, Infosys, and HCL Tech were trading lower in early deals.
