Bringing relief to Maharashtra’s citizens ahead of the scorching summer, the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) has announced a reduction in power tariffs. The move comes as a Gudi Padwa gift to consumers, as MERC rejected the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL)proposal to increase rates.
Rebate Introduced Under Time-of-Day Tariff
The Commission has approved the Time-of-Day (ToD) tariff for residential consumers, allowing MSEDCL to install smart ToD meters in households on a large scale. Under this system:
- Consumers will receive a rebate of 80 paise per unit for electricity usage between 9 AM and 5 PM, further lowering costs for common households.
No Restrictions on Rooftop Solar Consumers
MERC also clarified that residential consumers with rooftop solar systems will continue to benefit under the net metering system with ToD meters.
- There will be no restrictions on adjusting banked solar energy, and net consumption after solar adjustment will be billed at regular tariff rates.
MSEDCL’s Tariff Hike Proposal Rejected
MSEDCL had sought a tariff hike over the next five years, citing a requirement for an additional ₹48,066 crore in revenue recovery. However, MERC’s review revealed that MSEDCL had been overcharging consumers, and its actual requirement was ₹44,480 crore lower than projected.
As a result, tariffs have been reduced across all consumer categories, offering much-needed relief to households and businesses in Maharashtra.
