Road accidents and fatalities in Nagpur have seen a notable decline in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year. According to data from Nagpur City Police, accident cases between January 25 and March 25, 2025, decreased by 22.22%, while fatalities dropped by 18%.
Accident Data Comparison:
• January 24 – March 24, 2024: 99 accidents, 100 deaths
• January 25 – March 25, 2025: 77 accidents, 81 deaths
The decline is attributed to improved traffic management and the ‘Footpath Freedom Campaign’ led by DCP Traffic Archit Chandak. Launched earlier this year, the initiative aimed to remove illegal parking and encroachments on sidewalks, ensuring better pedestrian mobility and reducing accident risks.
Pedestrian Safety Still a Major Concern
Despite the drop in overall accidents, pedestrian fatalities continue to be a pressing issue. Over the last 15 months, every third road fatality in Nagpur involved a pedestrian. In 2024, the city recorded 1,257 road accidents, resulting in 345 deaths, of which 104 victims (30%) were pedestrians.
From January 1 to March 28, 2024, 27 pedestrians lost their lives in road accidents. Experts cite ongoing construction work, footpath encroachments, lack of traffic monitoring at key intersections, and human error as major contributing factors.
While the decline in accidents is a positive development, authorities stress the need for continued efforts to enhance pedestrian safety and prevent further fatalities on Nagpur’s roads.
