The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘orange’ alert for thunderstorms with lightning in four districts of Vidarbha on April 2 and 3.
According to the Weather Department, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Amravati, and Yavatmal may also experience gusty winds of 40-50 kmph and hailstorms over the next two days.
The Weather Department has issued a ‘yellow’ alert for all other parts of Vidarbha, including Nagpur, on April 2 and 3.
On Tuesday, cloudy weather led to a sharp drop in maximum temperatures across Vidarbha, falling by 2-7 degrees Celsius within 24 hours.
Amravati saw the steepest decline, with the temperature dropping by 7.2 degrees Celsius, recording the lowest maximum temperature at 33.6 degrees Celsius. Nagpur experienced the second-highest drop, falling by 5.5 degrees Celsius to 34.4 degrees Celsius.
Except for Bramhapuri and Chandrapur, all other places in Vidarbha recorded maximum temperatures below 40 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.
In light of the forecast, people have been advised to stay alert, take shelter during thunderstorms to avoid lightning, and follow traffic advisories in urban areas.
According to the Weather Department, a cyclonic circulation is present over Marathwada and nearby regions in the lower tropospheric levels. Additionally, a north-south trough extends from this circulation over Marathwada to north Tamil Nadu, passing through interior Karnataka.
Due to these weather systems and the confluence of moist winds from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-60 kmph) are expected over Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Telangana, coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Mahe, Konkan and Goa, and Madhya Maharashtra from March 31 to April 4.
