In a swift action against illegal betting during the ongoing IPL 2025 season, Unit 4 of the Nagpur Crime Branch uncovered a betting racket being operated from a Maruti Brezza during the April 3 Kolkata Knight Riders vs Sunrisers Hyderabad match.
The operation took place between 9:25 pm and 10:40 pm near Mangal Murti Chowk, following a tip-off received by crime branch officials. Acting promptly, the team laid a trap and raided the parked Brezza (registration MH 49 AS 5772), where they found one individual actively accepting bets via mobile phone.
The accused, identified as Pramod Dayaramji Marodkar (43), a resident of Vishwakarma Nagar, Ajni, was caught red-handed accepting wagers on the live IPL match. During questioning, Marodkar confessed to managing collections, while his associate, Rakesh (accused No. 2), who is currently absconding, handled the odds and bet placements.
Police seized ₹9,860 in cash, three mobile phones, other betting paraphernalia, and the car used in the operation—valued at a total of ₹6.21 lakh. A case has been registered at Nandanvan Police Station under Section 12(A) of the Maharashtra Gambling Prevention Act based on a complaint filed by police personnel Nazir Sheikh. Further investigation is ongoing.
The crackdown was conducted under the supervision of Commissioner of Police Dr. Ravinder Kumar Singal, Joint CP Nisar Tamboli, Additional CP (Crime) Sanjay Patil, DCP (Detection) Rahul Makanikar, and ACP (Crime Branch) Abhijeet Patil. The operation was led by PI Kamalakar Gaddime and his Unit 4 team.
