Amid rising tensions following the Wakf Bill’s approval in Parliament, protests and calls for Shaheen Bagh-style demonstrations by some Muslim leaders have triggered heightened security across the country. In Nagpur, Police Commissioner Dr. Ravindra Singhal led a major flag march late Friday, with around 5,000 personnel deployed to display preparedness and maintain public confidence.
The flag march began at Mayo Chowk and passed through major locations like Agrasen Chowk, Chitroli Chowk, Kelibagh Road, Badkas Chowk, Old Mangalwari, Gandhi Gate, Tilak Statue Chowk, Gandhi Sagar Chowk, Cotton Market, Bardi Bazaar, Variety Chowk, and Samvidhan Chowk, ending at the Police Headquarters.
The move comes in the wake of recent communal tensions and is part of the police’s strategy to ensure peace during the upcoming Ram Navami festivities. Special focus is being given to sensitive areas, with the flag march aimed at boosting public confidence and deterring mischief-makers.
Tight Vigil on Social Media to Curb Misinformation
Nagpur Police have intensified monitoring of social media platforms after identifying fake news and provocative content as key triggers behind recent unrest. Officials have warned of strict action against anyone spreading hate or inciting violence online.
An advisory has urged citizens to ignore rumours and report suspicious activity. “Those posting inflammatory content will face serious consequences,” it stated.
With stepped-up surveillance, patrolling, and outreach efforts, the police reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and communal harmony across the city.
