With temperatures in Vidarbha soaring to 44°C, the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court has directed schools in the region to revise their examination schedules to protect students from extreme heat.
The court has asked all educational officers to act swiftly and in coordination with the Education Department. The directive comes in response to a public interest litigation filed over concerns about the impact of the ongoing heatwave on schoolchildren.
The matter gained momentum following strong opposition from local schools, teachers’ unions, and parents. They objected to the prolonged exam timetable in Vidarbha caused by the state’s decision to implement a uniform examination schedule across Maharashtra. The matter was brought before the High Court through a public interest litigation.
During the hearing on Tuesday evening, the court underscored the need to prioritise students’ health and well-being while passing the order. The Maharashtra State Education Institutions Federation welcomed the decision and called on district education officers to issue the revised exam timetables by April 15.
The SCERT has introduced a common exam timetable for Classes 1 to 9 from April 8 to 25, 2025, along with the first-ever Periodic Assessment Test (PAT) for Class 9. Despite objections from teacher unions over regional heat conditions, the Education Department said exams will continue as planned unless revised by local authorities following the High Court’s order.
