Over the past few days, temperatures in Nagpur have been continuously rising, with the mercury crossing 40°C. The temperature is expected to rise further, increasing the risk of heatstroke. To prevent health issues caused by the heat, Dr. Deepak Selokar, Medical Health Officer of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), has urged citizens to take necessary precautions.
Given the increasing threat of heatstroke, the health department of the NMC is on alert. Additional Commissioner Smt. Vasumana Pant visited the NMC’s Indora Urban Primary Health Centre and the Ayushman Arogya Mandir Urban Health Centre at Indira Nagar, Jaripatka to review the preparedness.
Preventive measures against heatstroke are being effectively implemented across Nagpur city. Cold wards have been set up at the NMC hospitals, Government Medical College and Hospital (Medical), and Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (Mayo).
Adequate stocks of essential medicines have also been arranged. Drinking water stations have been installed at heat-prone and other public locations. All city gardens are also being kept open during the afternoon hours. Additionally, awareness pamphlets are being distributed at all ten zone levels to educate citizens about heatstroke, Dr. Selokar informed.
Symptoms of Heatstroke
An increase in body temperature is called heat stroke. Nausea , vomiting , fever , dry skin , fatigue , dizziness , headache , mood swings , irritability , tongue stiffness , excessive sweating , leg cramps , potretiat vedana , increased blood pressure , mental restlessness , unconsciousness .
Take Care to Avoid Heatstroke
- Avoid going out in the sun unless it is necessary.
- If you must go out in the heat, take proper precautions.
- Stay indoors during peak summer hours and drink plenty of water.
- Take care of your health and also look after others around you.
- Always carry a water bottle while traveling.
- Use a hat or umbrella when working outdoors.
- Cover your head, neck, and face with a wet cloth.
- If you feel dehydrated, drink ORS, lemon water, buttermilk, or other healthy fluids regularly.
- Keep your house cool using wet curtains, fans, or coolers.
Things to Avoid:
- Do not go out during the hottest part of the day or do heavy work in the sun.
- Never leave children or pets inside closed, parked vehicles.
- Avoid wearing dark, tight, or thick clothing.
- Don’t cook in the sun; keep your kitchen doors and windows open while cooking.
- Avoid drinking alcohol, tea, coffee, or soft drinks.
- Don’t eat stale or high-protein foods during the heat.
