Satpurush Wankhede has been feeding birds every day for the past 22 years at the famous Ambazari Garden in Nagpur. Staying true to his sense of duty and kindness, he makes sure to feed the birds on time every morning without fail.
Wankhede, who runs his own two-wheeler repair workshop, spends nearly three hours every morning feeding birds at different spots in the park. Carrying a backpack filled with grains and water containers, he draws hundreds of birds each day—earning him the title ‘Birdman of Nagpur’.
He says he’s ready to continue this service with his own money and stressed the importance of gardens in a growing city. His message is simple: to protect and care for nature through small acts of kindness.
“I consider them my friends. My only aim is to protect nature and the environment, which gives us everything. Amid increasing concrete jungles, such gardens become crucial,” Wankhede said.
“I have been doing this for 22 to 23 years. Any good thing that we do is pleasing. I have a workshop for two-wheeler repair. I earn this much to run my family and continue this work (feeding birds). I earn both for my family and them (birds) as they are part of my family,” he added.
Wankhede’s self-funded mission comes from his deep love for nature and concern about growing urbanisation. As more concrete buildings take over Nagpur, birds are finding it harder to get food and water. His daily efforts help fill this gap, offering support to these often-forgotten creatures.
Over time, people in the area have come to admire and respect his work. Some even join him now and then to help. His dedication has not only helped protect birds but also inspired others to care more about the environment.
