Nagpur city witnessed an unexpected spell of rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds on Wednesday, April 9, defying the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) forecast of dry weather for the day.
Earlier, the IMD had predicted thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) for April 10 and 11, while clearly marking April 9 as a dry day in its official weather bulletin. However, the sudden shift in weather conditions left residents surprised and disrupted normal life in parts of the city.
The unexpected downpour and winds also raised questions about the accuracy of weather predictions, especially after the IMD had issued a ‘yellow’ alert for heatwave conditions in Nagpur, Akola, and Yavatmal districts for April 9 and 10.
Until Wednesday morning, IMD bulletins continued to project dry conditions for Nagpur, but by evening, the weather took a dramatic turn—invalidating the earlier forecast.
