A head constable attached to Pachpaoli police station has been suspended after a viral video surfaced showing him allegedly assaulting and abusing a civilian who advised him to wear a helmet. The incident, which took place on April 9 along the Mankapur-Gorewada Road under Jaripatka police station limits, has sparked public outrage and prompted immediate action from senior police officials.
The accused, identified as Anand Singh, was seen in the video manhandling a local resident who pointed out that he was riding a two-wheeler without a helmet, despite having one placed on the vehicle. While Singh claimed that the civilian used offensive language, the video appeared to contradict his version and instead captured him using abusive words.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 3) Mahak Swami swiftly intervened, ordering Singh’s suspension and initiating a departmental enquiry into the matter. A non-cognizable offence (NC) was registered at Jaripatka police station, confirmed Police Inspector Arun Kshirsagar. Additionally, the Traffic Department issued a challan to Singh for the helmet violation.
Police sources said Singh was returning from a dental clinic due to a toothache and hence was not wearing the helmet at the time. However, this explanation failed to appease citizens, many of whom condemned the alleged abuse of power by a law enforcement officer.
In light of the incident, DCP Swami also announced the launch of mandatory soft skills training for police personnel across all stations in the zone. The training aims to enhance communication, professionalism, and accountability during interactions with the public.
The episode has reignited the conversation on the need for better sensitivity and behavior training within the police force to ensure respectful and lawful conduct in day-to-day duties.
