A porcupine, a rare and protected wild species, was successfully rescued by members of the Vidarbha Sarpamitra Samiti after being attacked by stray dogs in a residential layout in Hingna early Saturday morning.
Around 6:30 am, Akash Meshram, a member of the wildlife rescue group, received an emergency call from a security guard who witnessed the stray dogs attacking the porcupine. Acting quickly, the guard and a few local residents managed to scare the dogs away using sticks and cloths. In a panic, the injured and frightened porcupine took shelter in the bathroom of an under-construction building nearby.
Meshram, along with fellow rescuers Akash Mandal and Deepak Kumbhalkar, promptly reached the scene. The team carefully secured the porcupine and later released it into a forest area under the guidance of forest department officials.
Wildlife experts noted that porcupines possess sharp quills that they raise when threatened, which can make rescue operations challenging. Despite the risk, the team handled the situation with expertise and ensured the animal’s safety.
Forest authorities appreciated the swift action of the Vidarbha Sarpamitra Samiti team and thanked them for their dedication to wildlife protection and timely intervention, which helped prevent serious injury to the animal.
