Nagpur: Palm Sunday was marked with deep devotion and reverence across the city, ushering in the beginning of Holy Week for the Christian community. The day commemorates Jesus Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem, where, as described in the Gospels, he was welcomed by crowds waving palm branches and chanting “Hosanna!”
Observances began early in the morning with the blessing of palms at churches, schools, and religious institutions. Groups of faithful gathered in prayerful silence as palms were blessed and distributed. This was followed by processions where participants carried palm fronds—symbols of peace and victory—as they walked together in a collective act of faith and remembrance of the ancient biblical tradition.
A significant gathering took place at St. Francis De Sales Cathedral in Sadar, where a bilingual Holy Mass was celebrated by Archbishop Elias Gonsalves. The liturgy, attended by hundreds of devotees, was preceded by a solemn procession marked by silent reflection and spiritual introspection.
During his homily, Archbishop Gonsalves highlighted the deeper meaning of Palm Sunday, describing it as a journey not only of Christ but of every believer. “It is a path of love, sacrifice, and redemption—a call to humility and hope,” he said.
The celebrations set the tone for the Holy Week, leading up to Good Friday and Easter Sunday, the most sacred days in the Christian calendar.
