The long-pending Sports Authority of India (SAI) complex in Nagpur is finally moving forward, with visible progress on the ground. In partnership with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), SAI has begun constructing a boundary wall around the 87.5-acre site allocated for the national-level sports facility.
So far, 2,200 meters of the planned 3,000-meter wall have been completed, with the remaining section under construction. The project is being funded by the central government. However, SAI has clearly stated that no further funds will be released until the entire plot is cleared of legal issues and encroachments.
A major hurdle lies in Khasra No. 55 of Mouza Tarodi Khurd, where over 550 people had illegally purchased and even built homes on government land. Many of these occupants went to court, but NMC sources indicate their claims are likely to be dismissed soon.
Earlier, an alternate 140-acre site in Wathoda was proposed but dropped due to public resistance, leading to the finalization of the current 87.5-acre plot.
To rehabilitate affected low-income families, a relocation plan under the State Rehabilitation Housing (SRH) model was proposed on Khasra No. 58. However, the state government has not yet responded to the proposal.
The Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) and Tarodi Khurd Municipal Council are now preparing eviction notices. With legal clearance expected soon, the project is back on track, renewing hopes for a world-class sports complex in the city.
