In a decisive push to boost revenue, Municipal Commissioner Dr. Abhijeet Chaudhari has ordered disciplinary action against Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) staff who failed to meet property tax recovery targets last year. Officials with performance below 50% of their targets will be served show-cause notices, Dr. Chaudhari announced during a high-level review meeting on Thursday.
The meeting, focused on the performance for FY 2024–25 and planning for FY 2025–26, included Additional Commissioner Vaishnavi B, Deputy Commissioners Milind Meshram, Ganesh Rathod, Ashok Garate, along with zonal officers and revenue inspectors.
For the upcoming financial year, Dr. Chaudhari has set a bold ₹400 crore recovery target, up from ₹284 crore collected last year against a goal of ₹325 crore. “Timely planning, execution, and ownership at every level are vital,” he emphasized.
To meet this goal, NMC will issue 3.25 lakh property tax bills via post, while another 3.75 lakh will be delivered by hand. Updating citizen contact details, reassessing undervalued properties, and identifying new taxable assets have also been prioritized.
A special drive will be launched to bring new properties into the tax network, with accountability fixed at the zonal level.
To enhance public interaction, NMC has introduced a chatbot service for tax queries. Accurate GIS mapping and early follow-ups on government property dues were also stressed.
This assertive strategy reflects NMC’s intent to strengthen fiscal discipline and modernize tax operations.
