With temperatures soaring across Vidarbha and the possibility of pre-monsoon storms on the horizon, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has initiated a large-scale maintenance and repair campaign across its electricity distribution network in the Nagpur Circle.
The proactive initiative is aimed at minimizing power disruptions during the peak summer season and enhancing system resilience ahead of the monsoon. Drawing insights from past supply interruptions and the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) weather forecasts, MSEDCL has outlined key vulnerabilities—particularly the exposure of its infrastructure to harsh climatic conditions such as extreme heat, sudden gusty winds, and lightning strikes.
To address these concerns, MSEDCL has deployed teams in the Nagpur and Wardha districts to undertake essential upgrades and preventive maintenance. One of the major focuses is the pruning of overgrown tree branches near overhead lines, which are a leading cause of short circuits during storms. The utility is also securing necessary approvals to carry out this work in sensitive and densely populated areas.
In addition, technical teams are engaged in tightening loose guard wires, correcting drooping conductors, reinforcing weakened poles, and performing thorough inspections on distribution transformers. Maintenance of transformer components includes checking oil levels and replacing moisture-damaged silica gel. Earth pit reinforcements are also underway at various substations and power junctions to improve safety and reliability.
While some consumers may experience temporary outages during these operations, MSEDCL has appealed for public cooperation, emphasizing that the ongoing efforts are crucial to ensuring an uninterrupted and safe power supply through the summer and the forthcoming monsoon season.
