Nagpur: Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) has taken a pioneering step by making the study of the Indian Constitution mandatory for all students across its affiliated programmes. The university has introduced a 2-credit course on constitutional studies, becoming the first in the country to adopt such a move under the National Education Policy (NEP).
The initiative, driven by Acting Vice Chancellor Dr Madhavi Khode Chavre, Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr Subhash Kondawar, and Registrar Dr Raju Hiwse, will benefit approximately one lakh students enrolled in nearly 350 programmes across four major faculties.
Originally proposed by Dr Ravishankar Mor, Principal of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Law College and Chairman of the Legal Course Board, the plan was approved by then Vice Chancellor Dr Subhash Chaudhary. It received formal approval during the Academic Council meeting held on July 8, 2022.
In line with the decision, undergraduate and postgraduate syllabi have been updated across all faculties, with the Constitution module now compulsory in the second semester of BA, BCom, and BSc programmes. The new curriculum will be implemented from the summer 2025 examinations.
